World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15th has been declared world elder abuse day.
According to one United Kingdom statistic 500,000 older people are victims of abuse every year. Elder abuse is often called ‘the silent crime’, as children and victims of domestic violence often receive more media attention and preventative funding. Elder Abuse can include all forms of abuse – physical, psychological, financial and sexual as well as through neglect.
Caring for the elderly can be a exhaustive task especially for relative caregivers. The psychological effects of seeing a parent or respected family figure deteriorate can be stressful.
Unmanged stress has a direct correlation to aggressive behavior. Anger management classes focus on stress management, effective communication and emotional intelligence.
The prevention of elder abuse is a complicated matter. Any prevention program should include anger management education as well as detailed reporting measures.
