We always hurt the ones we love.
In anger management therapy, many participants identify that their personal relationships have been a major “trigger” for their anger. It is true that those closest to us know how to push our buttons, but ultimately we are responsible for our own actions.
In our anger management course many triggers may come to light. Through the process of anger management counseling one participant and young mother of an 8 year old daughter found that her family has generationally used fighting as a way to deal with their problems. This pattern goes back to before her grandmother and served a purpose of protection for the women in her family for many years but eventually started to become out of control. As a child she witnessed her family members getting into altercations with each other and with others and to her this was a normal part of life. What she found through taking anger management classes is that she was “wired” to respond the same way. She decided that that the only way to stop this family cycle was going to have to be with herself. She knows that the only way her daughter will have a different and healthier way of dealing with her problems is by watching her mother learn new tools.
For many of us, our anger or aggression has been learned. As adults it is our job to take control of our lives and our behavior and learn healthy coping skills to manage stress and anger. Taking an anger management class is one way of beginning this journey.
