November 19, 2009

Jump on board, get your ticket to the Great American Smoke Out.

Millions of Americans are committing to say No Thanks to cigarettes for 24 hours today. The hope is to jump start a nation-wide movement to eradicate smoking.

Better Health, Better Environment, Angry Smokers

There is promise of better health, and a better environment but there is also a possibility for a lot of angry smokers in withdrawal. A withdrawal symptom is something that a person experiences when he or she stops using a substance. In the case of smoking the substance is nicotine.

Smoking withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms from smoking may include dizziness, dry throat, excessive mucus, problems falling asleep, feeling tired and fatigued, increased hunger, constipation, depression and anger.

Anger Management Tips for smokers

If you find yourself on the verge of loosing your temper during the Great American Smoke Out try these simple anger management tips.

Partner Up – Don’t “Smoke Out” alone. Smoking is a very social activity and your mind find yourself isolated when you decide to quit. Find a partner who has agreed to quit smoking or better yet start a small support group.

Communicate- Its perfectly appropriate to talk to others about how you are feeling. Holding in your anxiety and fears about quitting smoking only increases your stress level. Be honesty about your struggle.

Exercise- Exercising is a great distraction. Many smoker miss the kinetic activity involved in lighting up. Moving around can help take the place of the ritual movements involved in smoking. In addition the endorphins produced through exercise help limit some of the physical withdrawal symptoms.

Adjust your expectations- You may find yourself frustrated and angry if you fall of the wagon. Recovery from smoking is a journey. Allow room for some failure in your recovery plan. If you are too hard on your self you may be tempted to give up totally.
