Things don’t always have to go my way: Self Talk Part 2

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Some days you are the pigeon; other days you are the statue.

When people read this “self-talk,” in anger management class, there is always immediate chuckling indicating self-awareness of how often we convince ourselves just the opposite – that things should go our way because after all, we are masters of the universe and legends in our own minds.

The mature person recognizes that things probably unfold in the world pretty much as they are supposed to – even if events don’t necessarily follow our personal plans, wishes, needs or wants. To what extent do we control our personal world? Philosophers have been dabating this issue for thousands of years without agreement; until they figure it out, you can manage your anger by realistically telling yourself that sometimes things will go your way, and other times they won’t – no matter how hard you try.

South Carolina teachers model poor anger management skills

Tawana Horton and Cabrella Pickney were involved in a physical altercation in their South Carolina 8th grade hallway. The problem is both ladies are nearly 30 years old and they are teachers.

The two teachers at St Anderws Middle School began to “mix it up” between class periods after bumping into each other.

It was reported that the two teachers had “beef” for some time and let their unmanaged anger get the best of them.

Horton and Pickney were arrested for disturbing school and booked into a Detention Center. Both teachers have been released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

Karen York, a school district spokeswoman would not discuss any specific disciplinary action taken against the teachers, hopefully an anger management class is in their future.

Camp helps children heal from anger induced by trauma

anger and greif

Thirty-one children from San Bernardino County who have lost a loved one to a violent death will be given the opportunity to attend a three-day camp where they can share anger and other emotions with other kids who have experienced the same trauma.

It will be held at a camp in the San Bernardino Mountains from March 7 – 9 and is free to all campers.

Camp Good Grief SVP is a collaboration between the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Victim Services Unit and the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. The effort is paid for by victim restitution funds from the District Attorney’s Office and generous donations from the San Bernardino Police Department Management Group.

Therapists and interns from Loma Linda Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, Loma Linda Child Life Specialists and District Attorney’s Office Victim Advocates accompany the children to camp, donating their time. In addition to grief counseling, the children get the opportunity to run, play and experience a great camp adventure. With this fourth camp, nearly 150 children have been able to benefit from this experience.
